Based in the Midlands, Consultant Vascular and Endovascular Surgeons Mr Donald Adam and Mr Martin Claridge are able to offer careful assessment, an expert opinion and patient-focused care to patients with a wide range of vascular problems. Both Mr Adam and Mr Claridge practise exclusively as vascular and endovascular surgeons at Heart of England Hospitals, where one of the leading vascular units in the United Kingdom is based. Practising exclusively as vascular specialists, these surgeons provide world class treatment to patients with arterial and venous disease using both traditional open vascular surgery and endovascular (keyhole) surgery. They are therefore able to offer the full range of treatment options to a patient with vascular disease.
They have undergone extensive vascular training, including international fellowships, to be able to offer the full range of treatment options (medical management, endovascular treatment and open surgery) for patients with arterial and venous disease. Both surgeons are supported by nurse specialists and sonographers with the intention to provide a one-stop diagnostic service and care whenever possible in an environment that allows patients time to make a choice for treatment of their vascular problem.
Donald Adam has a specialist interest in the management of aortic aneurysms and aorto-iliac occlusive disease and is a European mentor for fenestrated and branched stent-grafting for complex aortic aneurysms. He has published over 100 peer-reviewed papers, and was trained in Edinburgh, Leicester and Adelaide, Australia, prior to his appointment in Birmingham in 2004.
Martin Claridge was appointed as a consultant vascular and endovascular surgeon at Heart of England Hospitals in 2011 on his return to the UK after completing a year of specialised training in endovascular (keyhole) surgery in Queensland, Australia, where he gained expertise in endovascular aneurysm repair and percutaneous management of patients with peripheral arterial disease using angioplasty and stenting. In the UK he was trained in London and Birmingham, being awarded an MD from Birmingham University for research into early markers of arterial disease.
Consultations with Donald Adam or Martin Claridge are available at four private hospital locations in the Midlands, namely:
Spire Parkway Hospital, Solihull
BMI The Priory Hospital, Birmingham
Spire Little Aston Hospital, Sutton Coldfield
Warwickshire Nuffield Hospital, Leamington Spa
If intervention is required, emphasis is placed upon a minimally invasive approach, using small incisions and performed under epidural or local anaesthesia rather than an ‘open’ surgical technique under a general anaesthetic. This is often associated with lower risk of complications and is intended to result in a faster patient recovery. One of the benefits to be gained from consulting with a vascular and endovascular surgeon who purely specialises in the management of vascular disease is that the full range of treatment options are available to the patient thus allowing the patient to make an informed decision as to how to have their own vascular problem managed. All procedures are carried out by Mr Adam or Mr Claridge, both of whom are fully-qualified, experienced and skilled surgeons, and supported by trained and highly competent support staff in a safe and clean hospital environment.
Patients may be referred to Premier Vascular by their own general practitioner. In some circumstances, uninsured patients may be permitted to self-refer, without the need for a letter from their doctor. We are also able to accept requests for a second opinion from other consultant vascular or cardiothoracic surgeons and cardiologists.
Donald Adam and Martin Claridge are recognised by all major private medical insurance providers. Both are Fellows of the Royal College of Surgeons and are on the specialist register of the General Medical Council.
